Recently, users of social network sites (SNS) have serious concerns over privacy problems. However, they continue to share personal information freely on SNS. The contradiction between privacy concerns and self-disclosure behavior has attracted significant attention of a large number of researchers. Under the perspective of construal level theory and combining Privacy Calculus, Trust theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior, we propose a theoretical framework and test its questionnaire survey. We aim to explore the existence of the paradox and attempt to explain the phenomenon. The results indicate that the SNS user’s concerns over privacy problems have a significant effect on people’s distant-future intention only. This low disclosure intention is inconsistent with their actual behavior. Consequently, the SNS users’ privacy concern and disclosure behavior are paradoxical. The perceived benefits affect the people’s behavior through the mediator of near-future intention, which is the dominant factor of disclosure behavior. Furthermore, trust remarkably moderates the negative effect of the privacy concern to the disclosure intention, which results in the insignificant relationship between concerns and behavior. This paper provides theoretical and empirical evidence on the mechanisms of privacy paradox and helps the SNS providers in optimizing their service. |

To solve the difficulty in obtaining multidimensional data and the insufficiency of the quantitative and qualitative combination, this paper proposes a Journal Editorship Index (JEI) to assess the scholarly impact of academic institutes based on the journal editorial board data. The editorial board members are responsible in combining an assessment of both quantitative approaches and peer review. The JEI takes into account the influence of the journal rating, editor title, and board size. Experiments are conducted to assess the scholarly impact of geology institutions based on the editorial boards of 111 geology journals (which is comprised of 3811 members) in the Excellence in Research for Australia journal list. The results show that the JEI can well characterize the academic influence of the scientific research institutions. Moreover, the JEI score and editorial board member of the academic institutions in the field of geology show an unequal distribution. The JEI scores have a significant correlation with the number of journal papers, including the total cited times and H indices. The robustness analysis of the evaluation results shows that considering the influence of the factors, such as editorial level, journal grade, and editorial scale, will change the evaluation results. The results also indicate that the different weights of the influence of the factors will generate the same evaluation results. By calculating the correlation between the JEI index and the derived indices, such as JEI/JT, JEI/JR, and JEI/JE, the JEI score of the academic institutes has the greatest impact when the journal rating is considered. |

With the ever-growing numbers of academic papers published online, it is important to explore more efficient ways to identify those papers with general search engines. Aiming at providing ideas for automatic identification of online Chinese academic papers, this essay presents a comparative study of Chinese academic papers and news reports on their use of punctuation. Two corpora were built and analyzed: one comprising 6,906 academic papers and another comprising 16,316 news reports. Comparison of total punctuation numbers, relative usage rate, and average usage numbers between the two types of documents reveal that both similarities and differences exist in the usage of punctuation. Similarities in macro, relative level, and two stable sequences of punctuation usage were discovered, while the differences, which lie in micro and absolute level and independent sample non-parametric tests, show that Chinese academic papers and news reports are significantly different in their use of all 14 kinds of punctuation analyzed in this study. The findings were tested in the NSIRS, a system formerly developed by the authors, to which a punctuation analysis module was added to evaluate the identifying effect of punctuation. Retrieval experiments show that the punctuation characteristics of academic papers do have identifying effects and can be used to improve the retrieval precision of academic articles online. |

This paper presents a statistical analysis of the informetric characteristics in both intra-university and inter-university association of CHINA NINE (C9) and three other world-class research university associations. The overall profile and major characteristics of these world-class university associations are elucidated. This paper presents the main features of CHINA NINE and revealed the gaps between CHINA NINE and three other top university associations. It concluded that the total number of papers published by the C9 alliance members was impressive. However, the proportion of highly cited papers, international cooperation, and other influence indexes still needs to increase. The h index, Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI), Fied-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI), and other important indicators of academic influence were strongly correlated with scientific research investment, highly cited papers, citation per paper, and total citations. Good research universities showed excellent performances in the field of basic research, engineering applications, and other research fields. |

Economic value evaluates the value of patents in economic view point. Patent value ultimately relies on the application and inspection of the market, including the implementation, license, transfer, pledge, and other different forms. However, the patent application rate is low in our country, which leads to many wasted and unused science and technology developments and the failure to reflect the patent value. To reasonably determine the value of a patent, it is investigated in the field of biochip (patent no. ZL201010157733.8) using the economic value evaluation method of the operation manual of the patent value analysis index system. Based on the patent operational experience in the biological field and the situation and characteristics in the biological industry, seven indicators were selected, namely, patent application, patent application scale, market share, competition situation, the applicability of the policy, the capacity of the patent holder, and patent needs. Detailed analysis was performed to evaluate the level of various patent indicators to determine the economic value reasonably. A set of highly scientific and operable general evaluation methods of patent economic value were summarized according to the research results. |

Bradford’s law is an important rule of thumb to quantitatively determine the degree of interdisciplinary connection and describe the number of distribution of related papers in journals. The empirical rule can still be applied to the distribution of network academic resources, but less research is linked to tag distribution in the social blog. Selecting the social tags in the MetaFilter music section from 2013 to 2016 as an analysis unit, this paper first described the distribution feature of the tag frequency and tag type, and solved the curve fitting equation of the tag frequency distribution. Second, the authors have used the integral function to obtain the boundaries of the high-frequency interval, intermediate frequency interval, and low-frequency interval, and then verified the consistency of the distribution of the tag category in each interval with Bradford's law. Finally, the stability of the tag interval distribution is further verified through the relatively balanced distribution of users and posts related to the tags in each interval and the comparative analysis under different semantic environments. This study can be used to determine and forecast the core nodes of social blogs. |

Compared with the traditional Web search, social search provides users with increased convenience. It is more personalized, contextualized, and intelligent both for the search process and results. However, some issues with information value are always great concerns for the healthy development of social search platforms. In this study, we focus on the user-perceived difference of information value in the context of social search from two perspectives—user satisfaction and task complexity—and also conduct quasi-experiments to verify three proposed research hypotheses. Findings reveal the following: ① user perceived difference on information value and user satisfaction are positively correlated; ② variables such as novelty, originality, and enlightening associated with task complexity are positively correlated, while the other 10 indicators show negative correlations; ③ an interaction effect exists between task complexity and user satisfaction on information value, and the results are varied among different indicators. Results yield some implications for explicating users’ personal information needs on social search platforms and betters our understanding of the facilitation of information searching ability and information literacy. |

In information processing, individuals systematically prefer information that is consistent with their belief, attitude, and decision, and ignore or devaluate those inconsistent information, which is known as confirmatory information processing. From information sampling perspective, an individual’s prior and prior-consistent information is attached with high salience and is sampled disproportionately by individuals. The more-salient samples are pivotal to judgment and decision-making. An experimental study explores how individuals are holding different prior attitudes sample and evaluate the pro and con messages on a controversial topic. It finds strong evidence of a prior attitude salience. Specifically, in the attitude development process, individuals sample more information from their attitudes, instead of the attitude advocated by a message. In the information evaluation process, the prior attitude significantly affects an individual’s perception of the message attitude, evaluation of the informativeness of the message, and recall of the arguments (including arguments contained in the message and self-generated arguments). However, when the participants are free to select which message to read, the presentation order of the messages, rather than the prior attitudes, affects the selection behavior. The present study enriches our understanding of the biased information processing. It also has practical implications for real decision-making scenarios, such as persuasion and marketing, public opinion, and scientific knowledge communication. |
