Abstract This paper makes a bibliometric analysis, comparing the scholarly impact of journal papers published in the same journal with or without a preprint version deposited in arXiv (arXiv papers). Based on the arXiv papers published in journals indexed in Web of Science and assigned to Information Science & Library Science (LIS) and the field of robotics respectively, this paper explores the effect of preprints on the scholarly impact of journal papers across two fields from four perspectives: “increasing trend”, “time lag”, “citation advantage”, and “citation trend”. The results show that the amount of arXiv papers is increasing indicating that most authors prefer to publish a pre-print in a journal or submit a post-print to arXiv within two years before or after its corresponding journal printed-publication time. Papers deposited in arXiv have an obvious citation advantage compared with non-arXiv papers published in the same journal; the average citation increases rapidly after the post-prints are deposited in arXiv.
