Abstract Research on the theoretical foundations of information science has experienced significant changes owing to the new information infrastructure. This paper reviews the progress of information science theories spanning 30 years (1987-2017). It indicates the evolution of the research object of information science from document to information and then to knowledge. It discusses the debate about the nature of the research object “Qingbao” (information) and the related knowledge view. Moreover, it explores the metatheories of information science from the perspective of philosophy. It also systematically elucidates the theoretical core of information science and the progress and problems of theoretical system construction in information science.
